THE TRADITION OF THE CLOCK AT THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
An unusual custom
In 2008, the tradition of giving a unique clock to the team of a new show started. It’s a way to accompany them in their adventures, wether around the world (for the touring shows) or in their “new home” (for the steady shows in Las Vegas).
This tradition begun when a prop master from the Costums department had the idea of making a clock with the inspiration of ZAIA and to give it as a goodbye present to the team of the show, which was leaving Montreal (where the show has been created) for Macao. Travelling with the team of artists, trainers, stage workers, therapists, head costumer and many others, this clock became a symbol, a strong link between them and the team from the headquarters without whom the show wouldn’t have been possible.
With any new productions, the tradition went on to become, for a few years, the object of a contest: The clock contest. Following inspirational pictures and a series of predetermined parameters (size, resistance of the mechanism and used compounds, transport box, etc.), the employees of the Costums department were invited to submit their ideas, on a single basis or by teaming with some colleagues. The idea chosen by the creative team of the show would then come to life, in the exact same premices where the costums are made.
Ever since, it the accessories department from the Costums Workshop that imagines and conceives these clocks. They are unveiled and send the show’s team by the President and Chief Executive, Daniel Lamarre, during the employees’ premiere.
Since ZAIA, the following shows have all received one of this amazing clocks: ZED, CRISS ANGEL Believe, OVO Banana Shpeel, Viva ELVIS, TOTEM, Zarkana, IRIS, Michal Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, KURIOS et LUZIA . Et comme vous pourrez en jugez par les quelques images ci-dessous, ces pièces sont le reflet de l’immense talent et de la passion qu’incarnent les employés du Cirque du Soleil.
